Spork: I liked this movie. It wasn’t as funny as it thought it was and it was a bit too Napoleon Dynamite-ish at times—but I liked it. For a good chunk of the movie I felt like it was set in like, 1992—but it wasn’t. I really liked how they handled her (SPOILER ALERT) being trans. It wasn’t the point of the movie she just happened to a nerdy outcast who was also trans. Everyone being an exaggerated stereotype came off a bit racist at times—but I think everyone was just supposed to be an exaggerated stereotype so it was fine. There were definitely points when I thought, Where the fuck is this going—but then it had a really cute ending that almost made misty eyed. Also, it was strange that the voice of Lisa Simpson, Yeardley Smith, appeared in only one short scene.

Detention: I’d been wanting to see this movie since I saw the first trailer for it last year. I was expecting a movie not unlike Kaboom (the weird Gregg Araki movie)—a bunch of weird nonsense all clumped together in a movie (and it was). But, for some reason, it completely worked for me (even moreso than it did in Kaboom). I understand why someone might hate this movie—but I really loved it. Josh Hutcherson was lookin’ super hot in it and I actually liked his character and the main character (and the goth girl who reminded me of a character from Daria). There were a bit too many 90s pop culture references and the movie seemed to have three endings—but I still loved it. This movie is a weird scifi movie with aspects of teen comedy and slasher film throughout. But, after seeing the movie, you kinda understand how it’d be very very hard to market and describe in one sentence. And why it was maybe delayed for so long.

Everything Must Go: This movie was fine. I think the cast and the characters were all pretty great. Will Ferrell did a good job in this serious role—he played a fairly unlikeable guy. And I appreciated the lack of romance in the plot…but I still wanted something more from this movie. It was slow and kind of went nowhere.
